ASA 159 Chemical Dependencies

This course provides a study of the epidemiological, etiological (genetic factors, nature of addiction), effects of alcohol, tobacco and other substance use and abuse, including: pharmacological, physiological and psychological dimensions of chemical dependency. Emphasis will be placed on the bio-psychosocial model of addiction as it is utilized in chemical dependency intervention, counseling and treatment. An overview of the history of chemical use and abuse will be presented. Basic concepts of toxiology testing and screening will be reviewed and medications for addictions treatment will be explored.
