PHY 211 Physics I Mechanics & Thermodynamics Credits: (4)
This first course in a calculus-based physics sequence is designed for students in engineering, physical sciences, computer science, and other STEM fields. PHY 211 rigorously explores mechanics topics, including kinematics, Newton’s laws, energy, momentum, rotational dynamics, fluids, and gravitation, using calculus to solve complex problems and deepen understanding of forces and motion. The course also introduces fundamental thermodynamics concepts, such as temperature, heat transfer, and the laws of energy transformations, building a solid foundation in mechanics and thermal physics.
Laboratory sessions complement theoretical knowledge by providing hands-on experience in experimental physics, data collection, and analysis, preparing students to communicate scientific findings effectively. With three lecture hours and three laboratory hours per week, PHY 211 equips students with critical problem-solving abilities and the scientific rigor needed for advanced study in STEM fields. Prerequisite(s): MAT 161 .
