ARH 241 Mechanical and Electrical Systems: An Introduction

Credits: (3)
Introductory survey of mechanical and electrical systems for buildings. Topics will include heating, ventilating, air conditioning (HVAC), plumbing, fire protection, electrical power, and lighting systems for residential and commercial buildings. Auxiliary electrical systems such as security, public address, fire detection and alarm systems will be briefly discussed. Coordination of these systems with existing architectural plans will be emphasized. Instruction will involve case studies of pre-designed buildings. The primary method of learning and evaluation will be through student prepared drawings. Prerequisite(s): ARH 121 .

Learning Outcomes
  1. Develop and demonstrate understanding of mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection systems.
  2. Demonstrate use of fundamental concepts for selecting heating, ventilation, air conditioning, water supply, sanitary sewage, sanitary vent, fire protection, power and illumination systems.
  3. Describe the sizing approaches and estimate space requirements for MEP systems.
  4. Develop the ability to evaluate and solve problems in overall MEP systems coordination.
  5. Develop and demonstrate understanding of special systems such as: fire alarm, natural gas, medical gases, bulk fuel oil and laboratory gasses.
  6. Develop and demonstrate understanding of sustainability approaches, as they pertain to MEP systems and apply fundamental LEED v.3 rating system documentation requirements.
  7. Demonstrate an ability to analyze, develop, and present project solutions.
