ART 109 Principles of Drawing

Introductory course for non-art majors. An exploratory course that analyzes the components of drawing (line, shape, form, value, transition, texture, tension, balance, composition, etc.) Subject matter varies and may include still-life, landscape, architectural and figurative elements.

Learning Outcomes
  1. Express the outer contour edge, separation, prominence, depth, and surface of forms as they appear in space.
  2. Judge shape and size relationships and how they spatially coordinate within their environment and infer three-dimensional depth.
  3. Represent light and shadow indicating three dimensional form, special depth, and surface.
  4. Manipulate a variety of drawing mediums in a controlled and purposeful manner.
  5. Place imagery within the framework of the picture plane with a rudimentary understanding of design concepts.
  6. Discuss (with professional terminology) and evaluate own and others’ work, as well as demonstrate an understanding of constructive criticism and self-analysis.
