ART 203 Typography and Layout Credits: (3) Basic principles of typographic design and typesetting will be studied along with letterforms, their development and present trends. How to select fonts and create a hierarchy of information in design will be emphasized. Student projects will demonstrate how visual layout and typographic composition can be used to communicate ideas. Requirement for Graphic Design Majors.

- Discern type classifications with an understanding of letterform terminology and construction.
- Demonstrate an understanding of typographic measuring system copy fit text.
- Identify type styles and demonstrate appropriate usage in design.
- Demonstrate understanding of the history of type design including current trends.
- Organize information and establish a hierarchy of importance within a given text.
- Visually organize and communicate on single and multi-page documents.
- Create and edit style sheets for multi-page document design.
- Discuss and evaluate the class’s and the student’s own work as well as demonstrate an understanding of constructive criticism and self-analysis.
