BIO 151 General Biology I Credits: (4) This course explores the molecular and cellular basis of life. Topics covered include the biochemical make-up of cells, membrane transport, cellular respiration, photosynthesis, protein synthesis, cellular division, inheritance, and evolution. Plant structure and reproduction are also introduced. This course is intended for Math/Science majors and is the prerequisite for BIO 152 . Successful completion of both high school biology and chemistry is strongly recommended.

Learning Outcomes
- Describe and apply the scientific method.
- Discuss basic concepts of evolution.
- Compare and contrast the biochemical make-up and structural organization of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.
- Describe key cellular reactions, applying an understanding of basic chemistry/biomolecules and explaining where/how/why the reactions occur.
- Solve inheritance word problems and explain principles of inheritance as it relates to DNA structure, DNA replication, meiosis, and gene expression.
- Identify and describe key aspects of vascular plant structure and reproduction, with a focus on angiosperms.
- Demonstrate competency to work safely and effectively with others and demonstrate proper use of scientific laboratory equipment in a hands-on, classroom-based, laboratory setting.
