CHI 102 Elementary Chinese II Credits: (3)
This course is a sequel to Elementary Chinese I. It builds upon the basic grammatical, linguistic, communicative and cultural concepts learned in CHI 101 . Students learn to communicate in the context of an increasing number of daily life topics. Topics may include, but are not limited to, food and dining, weather, transportation, urban and commercial contexts, clothing and other belongings, health, leisure activities and travel plans. This course also fulfills the Global Awareness and Diversity (GLAD) requirement at OCC. Prerequisite(s): CHI 101 or permission of instructor.

Learning Outcomes
- comprehend clearly spoken speech containing familiar sentences and structures
- apply familiar structures and vocabulary when speaking
- exhibit pronunciation and tonal accuracy adequate to be understood by a native speaker
- decode familiar material in a recombined form, in dialogue or narrative form while reading
- recognize about 1000 simplified Chinese characters and deduce the general meaning of passages containing many familiar characters
- render Pinyin romanizations of familiar words and enter these in the computer to create simplified Chinese characters
- write about 300 simplified Chinese characters
- engage in basic functional and social dialogue using familiar vocabulary and structures in familiar situations
- describe the basic components of Chinese sentence structure and character formation
- discuss in a rudimentary manner the cultural heritage of China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and the international Chinese community and be able to contrast the Chinese culture with his or her own in an informal manner
