CRJ 226 Law Enforcement Process Credits: (3)
This course covers the history and development of law enforcement in modern society and the various systems of police control; philosophical aspects of police service with an overview of crime and police problems; the process of justice and constitutional limitations on law enforcement; organization and jurisdiction of local, state and federal agencies. A survey of professional career opportunities is interwoven into the course, as well as the critical importance of an ethical decision making process in every aspect of police activity. Prerequisites: CRJ 101 .
Learning Outcomes
- Describe the historical evolution of law enforcement philosophy, organization and services.
- Evaluate theoretical trends as they relate to past, present, and future law enforcement practices within the context of the American legal system.
- Discuss the basic dynamics of law enforcement in response to internal and external influences of the profession.
- Identify issues that deal directly with law enforcement agencies and their personnel within the context of police subculture and the practitioner’s use of discretion.
- Discuss ethical issues and describe the appropriate corresponding behavior of the law enforcement practitioner in real life situations within the criminal justice field.
