CSC 211 Computer System Organization Credits: (3) This course emphasizes the underlying organization and operation of real computer systems at the architectural level. Assembly language is introduced to study machine instruction, control flow constructs, interfacing subroutines with the language C, as well as the internal representation of simple data types and structures. Topics include the fetch/execute cycle, bus structures, memory hierarchy and management, addressing modes, I/O, and subroutines. Prerequisite(s): CSC 110 or CSC 111 Three lecture hours per week.
Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate and apply the use of machine instructions through assembly language as they relate to flow control constructs, internal data type representation and structures, procedure calls, and subroutines that interface with C.
- Illustrate the differences in computer system organization at the computer architecture level.
- Apply the concept of performance optimization as it applies to memory hierarchy, bus structures, the fetch/execute cycle, and the impact multiple processors have on parallel computing.
