EDU 180 Early Childhood Education: An Introduction Credits: (3)
Early Childhood Education: An Introduction, provides an essential foundation for prospective teachers in early childhood (birth–grade 2) and childhood education (grades 1–6). Students will explore the historical, philosophical, and cultural roots of the field while engaging with contemporary issues shaping education today. Through critical reflection, collaborative learning, and exposure to diverse perspectives, students will begin to develop their own professional identity, educational philosophy, and foundational teaching skills. Emphasis will be placed on equity, inclusion, and the role of educators as change agents in today’s schools. Observations of children in educational settings are required, offering students meaningful insight into real-world classroom environments.
Learning Outcomes
- Examine the historical, philosophical, and cultural influences that have shaped early childhood and childhood education in the U.S., and how these continue to impact today’s classrooms.
- Evaluate the core components of high-quality early learning environments, including teacher preparation, inclusive and developmentally appropriate practices, and culturally responsive curriculum.
- Compare various models of early childhood education, reflecting on how program design, policy, and community needs shape practice.
- Analyze how public policies affect children, families, and educators, and explore ways to advocate for equitable, supportive learning environments.
- Reflect on personal values, strengths, and professional goals, using classroom observations to inform one’s evolving identity as an educator.
