EDU 182 Child Growth and Development Credits: (3)
Child Growth and Development investigates how children from prenatal to adolescent grow physically, cognitively, emotionally, and socially. Students will analyze both typical and atypical developmental patterns, using the whole-child systems approach to understand how milestones, theories, and sociocultural factors shape a child’s growth. Key topics include prenatal development, early childhood milestones, family and cultural influences, and the transitions into adolescence.
Learning Outcomes
- Differentiate between the concepts of growth, development, and learning across the lifespan from prenatal stages to adolescence.
- Apply key child development theories (e.g., Piaget, Vygotsky, Erikson) to explain developmental milestones and behaviors from infancy through adolescence.
- Evaluate the interconnectedness of physical, cognitive, emotional, and social development using a whole-child systems approach, emphasizing the integration of these domains.
- Assess typical and atypical developmental patterns, recognizing variations and their potential impacts on future growth and learning.
- Investigate the role of sociocultural influences on child and adolescent development, including family, community, culture, and media, and understand their implications for learning and behavior.
