EMS 122 Emergency Medical Technician - Original

1. Define and describe the roles and responsibilities of the EMT-B in the Emergency Medical Services system.
2. Develop an awareness of stressors associated with Emergency Medical Services as it relates to the well-being of the provider.
3. Determine how to make correct decisions when confronted with medical, legal, and ethical dilemmas.
4. Define and identify various anatomical terms and describe the basic anatomy and function of the major body systems.
5. Identify the components of vital signs for infants, children and adults and describe the methods used to obtain each.
6. Define body mechanics and describe safe techniques for lifting, carrying, reaching, pushing, pulling and moving patients on various patient carrying devices.
7. Recognize adequate and inadequate breathing and the proper treatment utilizing various resources including oxygen administration, airway adjuncts, artificial ventilation, and suction.
8. Determine scene safety, nature of the illness or mechanism of injury and identify patients who require rapid assessment critical interventions, and immediate transport. 
9. Differentiate between rapid, focused and detailed physical exams.
10. Recognize the importance of the ability to effectively and efficiently communicate patient information through verbal and written reports to other health care providers.
11. Recognize the signs and symptoms and discuss the treatment modalities for medical emergencies including cardiac, respiratory, poisoning and overdose, allergic reactions, obstetrics and gynecology, diabetes, altered mental status, environmental and behavioral conditions.
12. Recognize the urgency of transport of patients that are experiencing bleeding and show signs of hypo-perfusion, have serious soft tissue injuries, present with musculoskeletal injuries or suspected injuries to the head neck and spine.
13. Recognize the special factors involved such as body size, developmental considerations and normal ranged vital signs of infant and child patients and its importance on emergency medical care.
14. Discuss the challenges in gaining access to patients, the need for aero-medical transportation, multi-patient considerations, various hazards and the use of incident command during operations.
