FPT 158 Fire Behavior and Combustion

This course explores the theories and fundamentals of how and why fires start, spread, and are controlled. Further the fire behavior and tactical considerations of wildland fires are explored. Students that pass this course are eligible to receive an equivalent certifcation from OFPC titled “Wildland Firefighting”.

Learning Outcomes
  1. Identify flow paths and ventilation-limited conditions and predict their impact on fire spread and firefighter safety.
  2. Evaluate how ventilation actions influence fire behavior, smoke movement, and interior conditions.
  3. Explain how fire behavior differs in basements, attics, high-rise buildings, concealed spaces and other occupancies.
  4. Analyze wildland, and wildland–urban interface fires and identify tactics for extinguishment.
