FPT 253 Fire Prevention

Credits: (3)
This course provides fundamental knowledge relating to the field of fire prevention. Topics include: history and philosophy of fire prevention, organization and operation of a fire prevention bureau, use and application of codes and standards, plans review, fire inspections, fire and life safety education, and fire investigation.

Learning Outcomes
  1. Define laws, rules, regulations and codes, and identify those relevant to fire prevention and life safety inspections. 
  2. Construct and deliver an oral presentation that conveys fire prevention concepts, inspection findings, and community risk reduction strategies to technical and public audiences.
  3. Demonstrate the civic discourse skills of inquiry, advocacy, and dialogue by engaging respectfully with diverse perspectives on fire and life safety inspections, procedures, and enforcement.
  4. Analyze fire prevention data, codes, and case studies to identify hazards, determine compliance, and justify corrective actions.
  5. Critically evaluate and provide constructive feedback on fire prevention messages, presentations, and public education materials.
