FPT 254 New York State Code Compliance

Credits: (4)
This course introduces the practices necessary for students to know to become New York State Code Compliance Technicians. Course content includes all material offered through the NYS Code courses 9A, 9B, and 9C. Major topics include administration and enforcement, principles of fire-safe design, and inspection of existing buildings and facilities. Students who successfully complete the course, including 100% participation, will be eligible to take the NYS Certification examination for Code Compliance Technician.

Learning Outcomes
  1. Identify inspections, tests, and maintenance requirements of NFPA codes and standards.
  2. Perform his/her job within the confines of local law and know the protections provided to citizens.
  3. Demonstrate an ability to use and locate key information using the NYS Code Books.
  4. Classify occupancies, including mixed-use occupancies.
  5. Identify the components of the means of egress permitted in different occupancies. 
  6. Identify fire alarm and detection features and automatic sprinkler system features that are used in different occupancies. 
  7. Apply code requirements for fire and smoke barriers such as for vertical openings, hazardous areas, corridors, etc.
