FRE 205 French Conversation, Composition and Reading I Credits: (3)
This learner-centered, intermediate-high level course, taught entirely in French, introduces students to literary concepts and French literature. It includes intensive work in conversation and composition. Solid preparation in grammar is recommended. Prerequisite(s): FRE 202 or equivalent, five years of high school French, or permission of instructor.

Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate an understanding of complex grammatical structures, including the morphology and syntax of simple and complex sentences.
- Demonstrate basic mastery of French literary language and concepts.
- Analyze the style, organization, main ideas and cultural or historical significance of authentic short stories, poems or other selected works of contemporary French literature.
- Demonstrate an understanding of most of the content in spoken French.
- Write complex compositions of at least 100 words in response to given themes or in connection with literary readings.
- Maintain a conversation entirely in French, with little hesitation.
- Identify historical and social events and values in literary readings and contrast the different French cultures.
