GER 101 Elementary German I Credits: (3) This course is designed for students with little or no previous knowledge of German. Students acquire basic grammar and lexical skills that will enable them to communicate in routine social or professional situations within an authentic cultural context. Topics may include, but are not limited to the following: biographical information, relationships, preferences, housing, daily routines and activities, and making plans. This course also fulfills the Global Awareness and Diversity (GLAD) requirement at OCC. Upon successful completion of GER 101, students may enroll in GER 102 .

- Infer general meaning and identify key information when listening to a native or near-native speaker who speaks slowly and clearly.
- Infer general meaning and identify key information when reading authentic or semi-authentic level-appropriate materials.
- Write using familiar, level-specific vocabulary and grammar with sufficient accuracy to be understood by a sympathetic native speaker.
- Ask questions and provide information orally using familiar, level-specific vocabulary and grammar with sufficient accuracy to be understood by a sympathetic native speaker.
- Identify, compare and contrast distinctive features, basic social values and practices of German culture that are fundamental to communicating with German speakers.
