HEA 209 Drugs and Wellness Credits: (3) This course is designed to introduce students to the physiological, psychological, and sociological effects of drug use, abuse, and dependency on wellness. Topics covered enable students to make informed decisions about drug use including: over-the-counter drugs, prescription drugs, herbal remedies, dietary supplements, caffeine, tobacco, alcohol and illicit drugs. In addition, community resources that assist individuals with drug dependence will be identified to assist individuals with wellness. Prerequisite(s): There are no prerequisites for this course.
Learning Outcomes
- Distinguish between drug use, abuse, and dependency.
- Identify the health and impairment effects that occur when individuals use and/or abuse drugs.
- Discuss how the process of dependency can occur and identify community resources to assist in treatment.
- Discuss the impact of drug use and abuse along a continuum,
- Identify current drug issues and explain how wellness could be affected.
- Develop a list of resources that provide valid information regarding the regulation and control of drugs, the potential dangers, and the acceptable safe levels for moderate and responsible use.
- Analyze drug related information to make informed choices regarding appropriate drug use that can be applied throughout life.
