HUM 165 Introduction to Counseling Credits: (3)
This course is intended as a basic introduction to three broad areas of counseling: historical and professional foundations of the counseling profession; counseling theories; and counseling specialties (focusing on specific populations with whom counselors work or professional practices in which they are engaged). It is designed to provide an understanding of the counseling profession, an overview of the developments of counseling, fundamental counseling theories, and the variety of counseling specialty areas of practice. Prerequisite(s): HUM 101 and PSY 103 .
Learning Outcomes
- Analyze the history and evolution of counseling and evaluate current trends shaping the field.
- Explain the personal and professional aspects of counseling (including counselor effectiveness, credentialing, systems of counseling, and levels of helping).
- Describe various counseling specialties and examine the specific skills and training required for each.
- Integrate ethical and legal aspects of counseling within a diverse society.
