PED 201 Fundamentals of Exercise Science

Credits: (3)
This course is an introduction to the nature, scope, and scientific basis of exercise and sport science. The course is aimed at developing an understanding of the physiological adaptations to acute and long term physical training. An understanding of these adaptations is crucial for the physical educator, athletic trainer, coach, fitness expert, or exercise physiologist. Emphasis is placed on bioenergetics as well as circulatory, respiratory, and neuromuscular responses during rest, steady state, and exhaustive physical activity. An orientation to professional activities, opportunities, and professional competencies in the field will also be addressed. Prerequisite(s): BIO 171 .

Learning Outcomes
  1. Explain the normal resting function and mechanisms of skeletal muscle, the cardiovascular system, the respiratory system, and bioenergetics.
  2. Describe the acute physiological changes that occur during exercise.
  3. Explain the physiological adaptations that occur following exercise training.
  4. Discuss how the various systems of the human body interrelate in response to exercise.
  5. Discuss the various control steps and mechanisms of metabolism (ATP production and ATP utilization).
  6. Organize and design a physical training or fitness program for young adults, athletes, and special populations.
  7. Describe the relationship of sedentary lifestyle and lifetime fitness to the risk for certain diseases.
  8. Present guidelines for a proper diet for health and athletic performance.
  9. Utilize basic research skills to construct a position paper on topic.
