POS 100 American National Politics

This course examines American political principles, institutions, policy processes, and controversies. Emphasis will be placed on the historical development of institutions including Congress, the Presidency, and the Supreme Court and the factors that impact the participation of citizens over time.? Students will study the theoretical foundations of the American regime and analyze the U.S. Constitution.? Significant attention will be given to how successive generations of Americans have interpreted the meaning of the foundational principles of equality and liberty, and review how those principles have been denied in practice to under-represented groups.

Learning Outcomes
  1. Explain the role of a liberal education in maintaining a democratic republic in the US and evaluate its role in preparing Americans for responsible citizenship and the exercise of their rights and liberties.
  2. Describe the design of the American system of government and identify models that political scientists have used to understand and evaluate the operation and development of this system. 
  3. Identify key features of American political institutions and consider the methods political scientists use to analyze them. 
  4. Analyze the role that political systems play in perpetuating power, privilege, oppression and opportunity for citizens.
  5. Identify the obstacles to liberty, equality, and equity that women and minorities have faced throughout American history and the means by which Americans have sought to address social and political inequities.
