PSY 210 Abnormal Psychology Credits: (3) Deals with the important aspects of “abnormal psychology”, both from a descriptive as well as a theoretical viewpoint. In addition to noting the various symptoms and characteristics of psychological disorders, an emphasis will be placed on explaining the possible causes of such disorders and their possible methods of treatment. Prerequisite(s): PSY 103 .

Learning Outcomes
- Define abnormal behavior, mental illness and insanity.
- Describe the evolution of explanations and major psychological theories for abnormal behavior.
- Explain the system used for diagnosis, assessment procedures and identify the major categories of diagnostic disorders.
- Identify the methodological strategies used in clinical research for determining prevalence rates, incidence rates and best practices (evidence based interventions/therapies).
- Describe the treatment goals, integrative approaches and modalities of treatment.
- Identify and explain the basic ethical and legal issues that impact those who suffer from mental illness, those who provide mental health services, and family members.
