PTA 102L Physical Therapy Procedures I Lab

Credits: (2)
Skills of PTA 102  are practiced in this course. Students will master entry level skills on patient positioning and handling techniques, heat, cold, and hydrotherapy treatments, and massage. Students will become proficient with ambulation using assistive devices and patient transfer techniques. Activities of daily living skills, use of adaptive equipment, and wheelchair prescription and use will also be learned. Prerequisite(s): Acceptance into the PTA program or permission of instructor Co-requisite(s): PTA 101 , PTA 102 , PTA 107 , and PTA 108  or permission of instructor.

Learning Outcomes
  1. Demonstrate proper preparation and maintenance of the treatment area to comply with lab and safety rules as listed in the PTA handbook including preparation of the treatment area, cleaning equipment and reporting any damaged equipment to faculty.
  2. Exhibit conduct that reflects practice standards that are legal, ethical and safe.
  3. Demonstrate proper body mechanics when performing lab procedures. 
  4. Demonstrate appropriate verbal and non-verbal communication skills with the “patient,” physical therapist and peers in an effective, appropriate and capable manner.
  5. Identify situations when interventions should not be provided due to changes in the patient’s status.         
  6. Demonstrate problem-solving strategies in lab activities during class and practical exams.
  7. Demonstrate competence in implementing functional activities as identified in the plan of care, such as positioning in wheelchair and bed to prevent contractures, pressure ulcers and deformity.
  8. Demonstrate competence in implementing functional training activities and data collection identified in the plan of care established by the physical therapist, such as activities of daily living (bed mobility and transfers).
  9. Demonstrate competence in implementing functional training activities and data collection associated with gait and locomotion activities identified in the plan of care established by the physical therapist.
  10. Demonstrate competence in implementing functional training activities associated with wheelchair management skills identified in the plan of care established by the physical therapist.
  11. Demonstrate competence in implementing correct and safe application of superficial thermal agents (moist hot packs and paraffin) to the patient based on the established plan of care.
  12. Demonstrate competence in implementing correct and safe application of cryotherapy (cold pack, ice massage) to the patient based on the established plan of care.
  13. Demonstrate competence in implementing correct and safe application of hydrotherapy to the patient based on the established plan of care.
  14. Demonstrate competence in implementing correct and safe application of therapeutic massage/manual therapy techniques to the patient based on the established plan of care.
