SOC 103 Introductory Sociology

This course is a foundational introduction to the broad range of topics encompassed in the “science of society.” Students will learn how to study society with sociological research methodologies and how to interpret research findings with sociological theories and analysis. Students will explore major sociological topics including but not limited to cults and authority, media, race and ethnicity, social inequality, public health, the family, religion, deviance, and socialization processes.

Learning Outcomes
  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the methods social scientists use to explore social phenomena, including observation, measurement and data collection, experimentation, evaluation of evidence, and employment of mathematical and interpretive analysis.
  2. Demonstrate knowledge of the major concepts, models, and theories in the discipline of sociology, including the sociological imagination, and be able to apply them to an analysis of social phenomenon.
  3. Analyze examples of historical and current social problems and subsequent social justice actions and see how they correlate with sociological concepts and theories.
  4. Explain both macro and micro sociological perspectives, including social stratification by class, race, gender, sexuality, and age.
  5. Identify the role social institutions play in socialization and social control to create and perpetuate the dynamics of power, privilege, oppression, and opportunity.
