SOC 183 Popular Culture

This course presents a sociological analysis of popular culture. Students examine the role of popular culture in society using sociological theories, methods and concepts. The course will further examine how the nature of popular culture is shaped by mass media organizations and how popular culture, in turn, shapes mass media, our perceptions of self, others, and many aspects of society. Students explore various facets of popular culture, such as print media, radio, television, films, advertising, sports, and popular music.

  1. Explain how popular culture relates to social norms and values.
  2. Demonstrate knowledge of popular culture as an agent of socialization across micro and macro aspects of society.
  3. Explain how popular culture reflects political, social, and economic values across history and cultures.
  4. Demonstrate an understanding of the significance of the study of popular culture as a sociological field.
  5. Describe the relationship between a region’s wealth and leisure time to its quantity of pop culture.
  6. Demonstrate knowledge of the sociological methods used to study popular culture and be able to apply those methods to the resolution of popular culture research questions and issues.
