SPA 204 Spanish Literature: An Introduction

At an intermediate-high level, this course will introduce students to literary concepts and literature from around the Spanish-speaking world. Intensive work in conversation and composition. Solid preparation in grammar recommended. Class conducted entirely in Spanish. Prerequisite(s): SPA 202 or equivalent.

Learning Outcomes
  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the complex grammatical structures including morphology and the syntax of simple and complex sentences.
  2. Demonstrate basic mastery of Spanish literary language and concepts.
  3. Read authentic short stories, poems or other selected works of contemporary Spanish and Latin American literature and be able to analyze their style, organization, main ideas and cultural or historical significance.
  4. Demonstrate an understanding of most of the content in native literary audio and videotapes or in conversations with native guest speakers.
  5. Write complex compositions with some difficulty. Students will be expected to write compositions of 100+ words each in response to given themes or in connection with the literary readings.
  6. Maintain a conversation entirely in Spanish, with little hesitation, in order to provide or request information and/or express feelings or simple ideas.
  7. Identify historical and social events and values in the literary readings and contrast the different Hispanic cultures.
