SUS 101 Introduction to Sustainability Credits: (3)
This course introduces students to a wide variety of Earth Systems concepts and provides sufficient background knowledge so that students can interpret and intelligently discuss sustainability issues. Students will explore how today’s human societies can endure in the face of global change, ecosystem degradation, and resource limitations. Key knowledge areas of sustainability theory and practice include permaculture, population, ecosystems, global change, energy, agriculture, water, environmental economics and policy, ethics, and cultural history.

Learning Outcomes
- Apply Earth System concepts in a wide variety of settings, as a responsible citizen, regardless of discipline.
- Apply scientific method to problems associated with Earth System problems facing society today; e.g. Climate Change, human population growth impacts, and economic decision making.
- Apply Earth science perspective to solving sustainability problems facing human society (e.g. sustainability energy, fossil fuel use, water resources, and agriculture).
- Articulate the connections of the scientific, technical, and social elements of Earth Systems.
- Create a personal Sustainability Plan.
