EMS 120 Advanced Prehospital Trauma Care Credits: (1)
This course is designed to introduce the students to specific pathophysiology, assessment, and management techniques for trauma patients. Topics include mechanism of injury, hemorrhage and shock, soft tissue trauma, burns, head and facial trauma, spinal trauma, thoracic trauma, abdominal trauma, musculoskeletal trauma, and special considerations. The focus of this course is on the complex cognitive and psychomotor skills necessary for paramedic clinical practice and the effective management of critically injured trauma patients in the prehospital setting. Prerequisite(s): matriculation in EMS program and C+ or higher in EMS 110 , EMS 110L , EMS 111 , and EMS 112 . Co-requisite(s): EMS 120L and EMS 121 .
Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate understanding of comprehensive trauma management, trauma center designations, and critical trauma criteria, and identify the need for rapid intervention and transport of the patient with traumatic injuries and criteria for aero-medical transport.
- Describe the kinematics of trauma and mechanism of injury, including energy and force as they relate to trauma to identify potential injury pathways and life threatening conditions while developing and implementing a treatment plan for the patient in a trauma situation.
- Integrate pathophysiological principles and assessment findings to formulate a field impression and implement a treatment plan for the patient suffering from traumatic injuries.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the epidemiology, morbidity, mortality, prevention strategies, and management objectives for bleeding and hemorrhage, shock and hypoperfusion, soft tissue injuries, facial trauma, head trauma (brain injuries), spinal trauma, thoracic trauma, abdominal trauma, musculoskeletal trauma, burn trauma, and environmental exposure.
