HUM 145 Introduction to Direct Support Professions Credits: (3)
This course will introduce students to the tools and competencies required to provide supports to individuals and families accessing community services to meet basic and essential needs. The course addresses the fundamental role of support staff and the basic skills needed to promote success and ensure the linkage of individuals and families to resources within the community. It will also provide students with the tools to communicate effectively with clients and Human Service’s professionals to establish collaborative relationships. Students will develop critical thinking and problem-solving techniques using case study examples and employing strengths-based, person-centered theory. Teaching approaches include lecture, discussion, electronic media, large and small group activities, modeling and role play.
Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate critical thinking and problem-solving skills to help meet individual and family needs in activities for daily living.
- Demonstrate ability to document interactions with individuals and families to meet the requirements of the agency, funding sources and oversight organizations.
- Recognize differing needs of individuals and families using strengths-based and person-centered approaches.
- Differentiate the steps required to create service plans to meet the goals of individuals and family systems.
- Describe the communication skills required to interact with inter and intra agency personnel and the individual/families.
- Identify a full range of Human Services available for individuals and families within the local community.
- Identify the steps and protocols used in mediation management within residential, shelter and transitional housing settings.
- Recognize the importance of ethical conduct as established by the various Human Services professions codes of ethical conduct.
