ATC 202 Automotive Suspension and Steering Systems

Credits: (3)
This course examines the design, construction, and operation of basic vehicular suspension systems, alignment geometry, wheel and tire fundamentals and steering systems. The emphasis is on service and electronic diagnostic procedures and these topics are discussed in detail. Laboratory exercises consist of wheel balancing and alignment, proper suspension and steering system service practices, suspension component diagnosis and replacement, troubleshooting techniques and related chassis services.  2-wheel/4-wheel alignment techniques are explored in detail. This course has an accompanying lab. Prerequisite(s): ATC 103  or CHQ 103 , or permission of department.

Learning Outcomes
  1. Identify the parts of a tire and wheel assembly.
  2. Evaluate tire ratings and wear signs.
  3. Compare different types of suspension and steering systems.
  4. Distinguish similarities and differences of the four common types of springs.
  5. Compare the differences between a linkage steering system and a rack-and-pinion steering systems
  6. Diagnose Steering and Suspension system using Alignment procedures
