ATC 141 Engine Concepts

Credits: (3)
A detailed study of the internal combustion engine. Topics include design criteria, theoretical combustion concepts, energy transfer, cylinder head design, intake and exhaust systems, and efficiency principles. Service operations and measurement techniques are investigated in laboratory exercises. This course has an accompanying lab. 

Learning Outcomes
  1. List and explain the function of the major components of the internal combustion engine.
  2. Identify the appropriate specialty tools and equipment typically employed in automotive engine service operations.
  3. Interpret various engine classifications and specifications.
  4. Discuss engine short block construction – cylinder blocks and crankshafts.
  5. Examine engine short block construction – engine bearings.
  6. Apply manufacturer approved procedures to engine removal, inspection, measurement, and replacement activities.
