FPT 181 Fire Department Technical Rescue

Credits: (3)

This course will introduce students to the different areas of technical rescue that fire and emergency services agencies provide to their jurisdictions. Topics include collapse emergencies, confined space rescue, elevator emergencies, machinery rescue, trench rescue, water and ice rescue. Students are also provided with instruction in rope rescue operations that will, upon successful completion, serve as the equivalent of the New York State Rescue Technician - Basic curriculum. This credentialing will apply to meeting the NYS 426 Minimum Standards for Firefighting Personnel. Prerequisite(s): FPT 111 , FPT 111L , or permission from instructor. 

Learning Outcomes
  1. Describe the different areas of technical rescue that are provided by the modern fire service. 
  2. Identify the different regulations (produced by NFPA, FEMA, and OFPC) that pertain to the delivery of technical rescue.
  3. Discuss the equipment, personnel, and training needs associated with various technical rescue disciplines.
  4. Describe the changes, developments, and innovations that have occurred within the technical rescue community.
  5. Identify the local, state, and federal resources/assets that are available to communities for technical rescue.
  6. Demonstrate basic rescue technician skills including:

                           *  Construction of basic rescue and rigging systems

                           *  Selection of proper PPE, Equipment, Tools etc

                           *  Patient packaging

                           *  Use of appropriate anchors

                           *  Lowering and raising techniques

                           *  Elevator emergencies
