HUM 170 Crisis Intervention in Human Services Credits: (3)
In this course students learn the fundamentals of crisis intervention and crisis leadership. The prevalence of acute crisis situations in our society necessitates that workers in the Human Service field acquire a knowledge and skill base for effective and professional crisis intervention. Special vulnerabilities and ethical concerns for at-risk populations will be examined. Students will apply crisis intervention theory and models of intervention to various problem areas such as suicide, sexual assault, domestic violence, substance abuse, grief and loss, and violent behavior in institutions. Students will also learn about ethical, legal, and diversity considerations in crisis and trauma response. Prerequisite(s): HUM 101 .
Learning Outcomes
- Analyze crisis related behavior within the context of various social, developmental, global, economic, political, biological, and/or environmental systems.
- Apply skills in crisis assessment, intervention and evaluation with individuals, families, groups and/or communities.
- Demonstarate and evaluate respect for autonomy, confidentiality, self-determination, and the fundamental rights of individuals and groups from diverse backgrounds in crisis intervention.
- Demonstrate the ability to use procedures for assessing and managing suicide risk.
- Differentiate between diagnosis and developmentally appropriate reactions during crises, disasters, and other trauma-causing events.
