CHQ 120 Commercial & Heavy Equipment Steering, Suspension, and Brake Systems

This course examines the design, construction and operation of commercial and heavy equipment suspension systems, alignment geometry, wheel and tire fundamentals, and steering systems. The emphasis is on service and electronic diagnostic procedures and these topics are discussed in detail. Laboratory exercises consist of wheel balancing and alignment, proper suspension and steering system service practices, suspension component diagnosis and replacement, troubleshooting techniques, and related chassis services. 2- wheel/4-wheel alignment techniques are explored in detail. This course has an accompanying lab. Prerequisite(s): ATC 103  or CHQ 103 , or permission of instructor.

Learning Outcomes
  1. Inspect and replace steering and suspension components (especially kingpins).
  2. Identify tire wear, damage and cause. 
  3. Properly remove and install tires from vehicle according to safety protocol.
  4. Demonstrate understanding of undercarriage components, i.e., wear, track adjustment, and lubrication.
  5. Service low pressure tire/auto-inflation systems.
  6. Demonstrate basic understanding of front/rear vehicle alignment.
  7. Demonstrate an understanding of various brake systems and components (drum brakes, electric brakes, wet brakes, disc, air, hydraulic, mechanical, etc.).
  8. Diagnose and repair various brake systems and components.
  9. Demonstrate an understanding of antilock brake systems.
  10. Demonstrate an understanding of federal regulations as they apply to brake systems (DOT).
  11. Demonstrate an understanding of brake specifications.
  12. Recognize stability control and collision avoidance systems.
