DSP 145 Introduction to Direct Support Professions Credits: (3)
This course will introduce students to the tools and competencies required to provide supports to individuals and families accessing community services to meet basic and essential needs. The course addresses the fundamental role of support staff and the basic skills needed to promote success and ensure the linkage of individuals and families to resources within the community. It will also provide students with the tools to communicate effectively with clients and Human Services professionals to establish collaborative relationships. Students will develop critical thinking and problem-solving techniques using case study examples and employing strengths-based, person-centered theory.

Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate critical thinking and problem-solving skills to help meet individual and family needs with activities of daily living.
- Demonstrate ability to document interactions with individuals and families to meet the requirements of the agency, funding sources, and oversight organizations.
- Recognize differing needs of individuals and families using strengths-based and person-centered approaches.
- Describe the communication skills required to interact with inter and intra agency personnel and the individual/families.
- Identify the steps and protocols used in medication management within various settings.
- Explain the importance of understanding client rights, adhering to the code of ethics, and responding appropriately in situations focused on safety and crisis intervention.
