ASA 150 Alcohol and Substance Abuse Counseling Theory, Skills, and Resources Credits: (3) This course introduces students to the career fields in Human Services, with special emphasis on Alcohol and Substance Abuse Counseling, as part of the CASAC 350-hour Certificate program for OASAS (Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services). Theorectical frameworks will be introduced that cover general human development, effects on family, culture, social systems, and the relationship to substance use. Students will be introduced to the theories that govern alcohol and substance abuse treatment, such as disease/medical theory, genetic theory, behavioral theories, etc. Students will explore the confidentiality and ethical issues within general Human Service practice and examine issues as they relate to substance abuse treatment. This course will prepare students to apply theory to practice. Prerequisite(s): English and reading placement must be at a college level proficiency.
