ASL 212 Deafhood: Moving Beyond Deaf Culture

This intermediate level course provides students with an in-depth cultural perspective on Deaf people who use American Sign Language (ASL). Students will analyze the impact of systemic oppression, discrimination, and audism on the American Deaf community throughout history. Course discussion will also focus on the progress of the Deaf community in terms of language, culture and identity, education, arts, intersectionality, Deaf Gain and social justice activism. Finally, students will reflect on their learning to apply course concepts to their own involvement and allyship with the Deaf community. Prerequisite(s): ASL 201  or permission of instructor.
