ASA 270 Counselor Spirituality and Wellness Credits: (3) This course is designed to increase the student’s knowledge and skill base of the use of spirituality and the importance of wellness in the field of alcohol and substance abuse counseling (as well as other Human Service professions). Topics will include understanding compassion fatigue, burnout, vicarious traumatization, client’s high risk behaviors and other related stresses that are inherent in the counseling process. Students will learn how to identify, prevent, and recover from these stresses. Knowledge of the importance of self care and the relationship between body, mind, emotions, and spirit will be emphasized and discussed. Resources for the impaired counselor and counselor wellness programs will be provided. Prerequisite(s): ASA 150 and ASA 159 , or permission of instructor.
