CHE 171 General Chemistry I Credits: (3) A study of atomic structure, chemical bonding, stoichiometry, kinetic molecular theory and the states of matter, solutions, ionic reactions, oxidation and reduction, acid and base theories, thermochemistry, molecular geometry, and gas laws. Prerequisite(s): MAT 114 or higher (except MAT 118). Students are expected to have mastered high school (Regent’s) chemistry or successfully completed CHE 121 . Students are strongly encouraged to co-register for MAT 143 if they intend to continue on to CHE 172 . An optional laboratory is offered for this course, CHE 171L , which may be taken concurrently with, or after completion of, CHE 171.
