ELT 271 Introduction to Microprocessors

Credits: (4)
This course is an introduction to basic principles of microprocessor architecture and assembly language instructions. The content of the course is divided into three sections: microprocessor architecture, mnemonics, and interfacing memory and I/Os. The course is designed around the microprocessor and its mnemonics instruction set. Topics in the course include an overview of computers and microcomputers, RISC and CISC microprocessor architectures, bus architecture, memory (R/W Memory, ROM, and EPROM), memory maps, I/Os, interfacing devices and introduction to RISC and CISC instruction sets used in contemporary microcontroller applications. The third section, interfacing I/O’s, introduces various I/O techniques, such as parallel I/O, serial I/O, and interrupts. 3 lecture hours and 3 lab hours per week are required for this course. Prerequisite(s): ELT 171  or permission of instructor.
