Communication Studies (A.A.)


If you are looking for a flexible degree to prepare you to transfer and complete a 4-year degree in Communication, Public Relations, Marketing, Journalism, Pre-Law, and a wide variety of other degrees then the Communication Studies A.A. degree is the program for you! In the Communication Studies program, you will learn foundational skills and meet the General Education Liberal Arts requirements at many 4-year colleges and universities. Effective interpersonal communication, public speaking, critical thinking, and listening skills are all part of that foundation. 

 

Additional skills taught from a list of elective courses include enhanced understanding of small group dynamics, intercultural communication, social media, public relations, communication at work, and gender and communication. Completion of the degree will give students planning to transfer a solid, diverse Communication and Liberal Arts foundation, which emphasizes oral and written communication skills. With organizations increasingly emphasizing effective communication skills, earning the Communication Studies A.A. at OCC will offer students a distinct advantage in their next steps at their transfer school. The Communication Studies A.A. has a wide range of electives for you to choose from and, with advising, you can focus your degree to work the best for you at your next institution. 

Communication Studies is primarily a transfer degree, however, if you wish to join the workforce directly after graduation from OCC, this degree will give you a competitive advantage to start out in such professions as: business, government and private agencies, communication training and consulting, public and media relations, organizational development, sales and marketing, development and fund raising, speech-writing and professional presentations, or anywhere communication skills are important, which is EVERYWHERE!

Mission Statement

The mission of the Communication Studies A.A.program is to provide students with the skills necessary to communicate effectively in interpersonal, group, and public settings within a professional context. Students will maximize their ability to communicate effectively in an increasily diverse workplace through the development of proficiencies in the production, performance, analysis, and reception of community messages. Development of these skills will provide students with the advantages necessary to compete in a modern job market.

  2. Demonstrate a basic knowledge of the components of communication studies in everday communication interactions.
  3. Demonstrate critical thinking skills as they are applied in communication contexts.

  1. COM 241, Building a Brand, serves as a capstone course.  It is recommended that you take COM 110 and COM 233 prior to taking this course.
