Computer Information Systems (A.A.S.)

A career in information systems support and management is possible by starting with an A.A.S. degree from Onondaga in Computer Information Systems. This program is designed to prepare a student for immediate employment. Additionally, the program’s curriculum is compatible with the curricula of several applied bachelor of technology programs.

The first year of a CIS student will contain a core set of foundational courses that consists of fundamentals of information systems, foundations of web development, principles of cybersecurity, introductory computer programming, and essentials of tech support.  In the second year, students will develop advanced computer networking skills, engage with server management, develop databases and systems for accessing them, and analyze and design information technology systems. Additionally, students will develop professional communication skills (written and oral) and engage with contemporary ethical issues related to the field of information systems and technology. To develop a sense of the business side of information technology, students will learn spreadsheet applications in a business context and be exposed to economics.

Embedded in the degree are two three-course microcredentials that can be taken independently of the degree for skill and career advancement, but they will also stack into the overall degree coursework. 

The Database microcredential consists of CIS 125 CIS 231 CIS 286 .

The Networking microcredential consists of CIS 170  CIS 270  CYB 250 .

Graduates with an A.A.S. degree in Computer Information Systems are prepared for entry-level work in the areas of IT support, network administration, database management, and systems analysis.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Computer Information Systems program is to provide students with the necessary knowledge and skills to be able to obtain entry-level employment in the computer technology or related fields.

Program Learning Outcomes

  1. Evaluate strategies to securely and ethically maintain computing and information systems.
  2. Demonstrate competency in database and information management.
  3. Diagnose and resolve hardware and software issues.
  4. Construct and configure the components of a network.
  5. Communicate effectively as an IT professional.

Graduation Requirements

All students must earn a minimum grade of C in all required CIS/CSC/CFS/CYB courses to earn the A.A.S. degree.

All required CIS/CSC/CFS/CYB courses must be taken within 7 years of graduation, due to the changes in technology and curriculum content.
