OCC’s Laboratory Science A.S. degree is designed to seamlessly transfer to bachelor’s programs such as Upstate Medical University’s Medical Technology BS and Medical Biotechnology BS degrees. Graduates of OCC’s program who transfer and earn a bachelor’s degree in the field will be prepared for careers in clinical laboratory sciences. Clinical laboratory scientists perform lab work that helps diagnose and treat disease and gather data for research studies. The degree also fulfills State University of New York General Education requirements.
Mission Statement
The Laboratory Science A.S. program is intended to prepare students for transfer to four-year institutions in fields such as medical technology, medical biotechnology, and laboratory science. The program meets all prerequisites for SUNY Upstate Medical University’s Medical Technology and Medical Biotechnology BS programs.
Program Learning Outcomes
- Explore the potential work environments for Medical Technology and Medical Biotechnology.
- Develop critical thinking skills and knowledge of the scientific method.
- Demonstrate and apply knowledge of laboratory safety and maintenance.
- Apply principles of Biology and Chemistry in a laboratory setting.
- Analyze, calculate, and synthesize mathematical and scientific data.

- Choice depends on math placement.
- If MAT 143 was already completed in semester, take MAT 151 , otherwise take MAT 143 .
- If MAT 151 was already completed in semester 2, take a Liberal Arts elective, otherwise take MAT 151 . MAT 151 is required for program completion.
