Paramedic (CERT)

This program is a partnership between Onondaga Community College and SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, NY, for individuals who are certified Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT – Basic certification required prior to applying). The primary goal of the Paramedic Certificate program is to prepare the individual to become a competent entry level paramedic. The program provides a mix of theory and practicum leading to immediate employment upon successful completion of certification exam(s). People who pursue certificates might possess an advanced degree and want to acquire new skills and knowledge. Upon successful completion of the program, the candidate is eligible for the New York State and National Registry of Emergency Medical Technician certifying examinations. Credits earned during the certificate program can be applied towards an Associate’s Degree should the candidate choose to continue their paramedic education.

The Paramedic program is an intense program that prepares students to handle the rigors of providing prehospital medical care in an emergency setting and under extreme conditions. Paramedics are essential components of the health care continuum. They are responsible for delivering the highest quality medical care under less than ideal conditions, bringing lifesaving emergency medicine to the patient’s side.

The Paramedic sequence requires a continuum; summer and winter sessions are required.

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this program the student will:

1. Demonstrate the use of critical thinking to assess and analyze information resources for clinical decision making.
2. Demonstrate communication ability by effective, accurate, and congruent transfer of information between individuals and groups.
3. Demonstrate effective use of technology by utilizing tools (computers, simulations, and equipment) to advance knowledge and expertise.
4. Demonstrate diversity awareness by understanding the uniqueness of each individual despite individual differences.
5. Demonstrate a professional identity that encompasses a commitment to integrity, accountability, personal growth/wellness, advocacy, and service to others.

Admissions Requirements

1. High school diploma or GED
2. Must be at least 18 years of age prior to enrollment
3. An overall cumulative average of 2.6, 77, or C+ or higher from the student’s most recent high school or college experience (grades will not be rounded and better than a C is required).
4. Placement into college-level English and reading
5. Placement into college-level math
6. Successful completion (minimum grade of 77 or C+) of one year of high school biology, or BIO 151, 152, or 121 (preferred) at Onondaga. A laboratory is a required component of these courses.
7. Designated level on standardized preadmission test (TEAS)
8. Current NYS EMT – Basic certification required (must remain valid throughout the program)
9. Experience working in the pre-hospital care environment
10. Completion of application form
11. Submission of three (3) letters of recommendation from previous employers, teachers/faculty, or professional colleagues
12. Successful interview with SUNY Upstate Medical University Paramedic program staff
13. Passing of a written and practical examination, conducted by SUNY Upstate Paramedic program staff

Graduation Requirements

1. Students must achieve a C+ or better in all clinical (EMS) courses and Natural Science courses.

Loss of Matriculation

Before entering EMS 210 Paramedic Capstone Field Internship, students must pass a standardized National exam assessing theoretical knowledge and skills competencies. Students may attempt the exam two times. If a passing grade (70 or above) is not earned after two attempts, students will lose matriculation in the Paramedic program.
