Health Studies (CERT)


The Health Studies certificate is for the student interested in pursuing a career in the healthcare field. Upon successful completion of the required 30-credits, students will be awarded the Health Studies Certificate and may obtain entry level technical employment in the healthcare field. Potential employment opportunities include health unit coordinator, medical scribe, and front-end receptionist.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Health Studies certificate is to provide students with an opportunity to explore career paths and prepare for employment in the healthcare industry. Students are offered a supportive and collaborative learning environment designed to help them work toward achieving their educational and career goals.

Program Learning Outcomes

Successful students will be able to:

  1. Compare and contrast the most common health professions, including work environments, education, and licensing requirements.
  2. Describe current trends in healthcare delivery systems.
  3. Apply knowledge of medical terminology as it relates to medical record documentation.
  4. Develop computer skills and knowledge of electronic health records used in healthcare delivery systems.
  5. Commumnicate effectively in various formats used within and among healthcare delivery systems, which may include written, oral, and technology related methods.
  6. Use critical thinking skills to analyze information collected and utilized within healthcare delivery systems.
  7. Develop an understanding of diverse perspectives in healthcare.

Graduation Requirements

All BIO, CHE, and HIT courses require a grade of C+ or higher to align with the minimum graduation requirements for the Health Programs at Onondaga.

  1. Students who have earned a C+ or higher in high school Biology should take BIO 171 Anatomy and Physiology I  or BIO 172 Anatomy and Physiology II . Please note that BIO 171 is a prerequisite for BIO 172.
