Broadcast Media Communications (A.A.S.)


The Broadcast Media Communications A.A.S. program prepares you for a career in the varied fields of media.  As a BMC student, you’ll obtain the fundamental skills necessary to perform as a media professional.  You’ll learn to develop, design, write, produce, and direct both independent and team-based projects. Faculty work closely with students to ensure a deep understanding of the creative and technical aspects of the production process. At the same time, you’ll receive a well-rounded education that incorporates the broader historical, ethical, and business aspects of media and its impact on both the individual and a global society.

Classes are taught in state-of-the-art production facilities. These include audio and video editing labs, edit suites, a professional television studio, and an internet radio station.  BMC faculty have extensive experience in broadcast media and continue to work in the field, bringing current industry practices into the classroom.  Classes are kept to a manageable size to allow extensive hands-on training.  In addition, the department maintains close ties with various media outlets that provide BMC students opportunites for professional internships.

BMC graduates are employed in radio and television stations, social media companies, media production companies, advertising agencies, sound recording facilities, the entertainment industry, and as self-employed independent contractors in Central New York and throughout the United States.

In addition, you may wish to transfer courses from the BMC A.A.S. to selected bachelor’s degree programs. If you are interested in this option, please discuss with your academic advisor who will assist you in planning these transfer credits.

Mission Statement

The BMC Program provides students the tools necessary to develop technical and creative skills needed to generate programming and to understand from an ethical, legal, and business perspective, the impact on the media consumer.

Program Learning Outcomes

  1. Identify historical, legal, and ethical aspects of media creative/business practices.
  2. Apply oral and written communication in the context of media content creation.
  3. Demonstrate critical-thinking, visual and aural literacy skills in media production.
  4. Develop technical proficiency in the audio and video production environment.
  5. Exhibit professional conduct that includes effective team work, work ethic, ability to meet deadlines, and dependability 

Essential Skills

The following is a representative list of the essential skills, with or without accommodation, expected of students while enrolled in BMC courses.

Manual Dexterity and Motor Skills

  •      Lift and carry up to 25 pounds
  •      Stand for up to one hour
  •      Manipulate and adjust (tighten and loosen) locks and dials on equipment
  •      Safely set up and operate professional audio/video equipment

Communication and Social Skills

  •      Perform effectively under stress
  •      Work in team-based environments
  •      Communicate in a professional manner, verbally and electronically

Program Requirements

Students will be required to have a smart phone or tablet that can record audio, video, download applications, and access wireless internet networks. A laptop for email, writing, access to online course materials, and Internet research is recommended but not required.
