Paramedic (A.A.S.)

This program is a partnership between Onondaga Community College and SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, NY, for individuals who are certified Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT – Basic certification required prior to applying). It combines sound academic education with hands-on training necessary to function in and out of the hospital setting as an Emergency Medical Service Paramedic. Paramedic-specific coursework consists of no less than 1300 hours of academic and clinical instruction provided by Paramedic instructors, and as certified by NYS Department of Health. The Paramedic program supplements the EMT – Basic certificate by providing an opportunity for students to pursue their A.A.S. degree. This program is ideal for firefighters, ambulance attendants, law enforcement personnel, and those interested in a career in health service vocations, including medical assistant and nursing. The Paramedic AAS sequence requires the basic EMT course leading to certification, which can be obtained through the student’s NYS County of residence, or through a private firm licensed by the NYS Department of Health. The Paramedic sequence requires a continuum; summer and winter sessions are required.

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this program the student will:

1. Demonstrate the use of critical thinking to assess and analyze information resources for clinical decision making.
2. Demonstrate communication ability by effective, accurate, and congruent transfer of information between individuals and groups.
3. Demonstrate effective use of technology by utilizing tools (computers, simulations, and equipment) to advance knowledge and expertise.
4. Demonstrate diversity awareness by understanding the uniqueness of each individual despite individual differences.
5. Demonstrate a professional identity that encompasses a commitment to integrity, accountability, personal growth/wellness, advocacy, and service to others.

Admissions Requirements

1. High school diploma or GED
2. Must be at least 18 years of age prior to enrollment
3. An overall cumulative average of 2.6, 77, or C+ or higher from the student’s most recent high school or college experience (grades will not be rounded and better than a C is required).
4. Placement into college-level English and reading
5. Placement into college-level math
6. Successful completion (minimum grade of 77 or C+) of one year of high school biology, or BIO 151, 152, or 121 (preferred) at Onondaga. A laboratory is a required component of these courses.
7. Designated level on standardized preadmission test (TEAS)
8. Current NYS EMT – Basic certification required (must remain valid throughout the program)
9. Experience working in the pre-hospital care environment
10. Completion of application form
11. Submission of three (3) letters of recommendation from previous employers, teachers/faculty, or professional colleagues
12. Successful interview with SUNY Upstate Medical University Paramedic program staff
13. Passing of a written and practical examination, conducted by SUNY Upstate Paramedic program staff

Graduation Requirements

1. Students must achieve a C+ or better in all EMS courses and Natural Science courses.

Loss of Matriculation

Before entering EMS 210 Paramedic Capstone Field Internship, students must pass a standardized National exam assessing theoretical knowledge and skills competencies. Students may attempt the exam two times. If a passing grade (70 or above) is not earned after two attempts, students will lose matriculation in the Paramedic program.
