The Direct Support Professional Certificate will provide a pathway for individuals to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to be employed after successful completion of the certificate. Graduates of the program will serve a variety of functions that directly assist individuals and their families to function with greater autonomy within their daily lives. Direct Support Professionals will enhance Human Service outcomes by providing advocacy, enhancing social skill development and supporting consumers navigating social service delivery systems within the community.
Mission Statement
OCC’s Direct Support Professional Certificate will prepare students to join the work force where they can help provide services for people with disabilities or other needs. Students will be prepared to enhance the social skill development of their clients and help them navigate support services in the community.
Program Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate professional skills such as advocacy, support, and navigation to assist clients in their daily lives and provide connections to community services.
- Recognize social cues and family dynamics to employ necessary strategies such as assertiveness and negotiation, that facilitate effective communication between the direct service professionals, their clients, and other service providers.
- Distinguish cultural and historical differences that would effect the working relationship between a Direct Service Professional and their client.
Graduation Requirements
Grades of C or above are required in all HUM courses in order to graduate.
