CHI 101 Elementary Chinese I Credits: (3)
This course is designed for students with little or no previous knowledge of Chinese. Students acquire basic grammar and lexical skills that will enable them to communicate in routine social or professional situations within an authentic cultural context. Topics may include, but are not limited to, biographical information, relationships, education, daily routines and activities, making plans, and dining out. Upon successful completion of CHI 101, students may enroll in CHI 102 . This course also fulfills the Global Awareness and Diversity (GLAD) requirement at OCC.

Learning Outcomes
- comprehend clearly spoken speech containing familiar sentences and structures
- apply familiar structures and vocabulary when speaking
- exhibit pronunciation and tonal accuracy adequate to be understood by a native speaker
- decode familiar material in a recombined form, in dialogue or narrative form while reading
- recognize about 400 simplified Chinese characters and deduce the general meaning of passages containing many familiar characters
- render Pinyin romanizations of familiar words and enter these in the computer to create simplified Chinese characters
- write about 130 simplified Chinese characters
- engage in very basic survival and social dialogue using familiar vocabulary and structure
- describe the basic components of Chinese sentence structure and character formation
- discuss in a rudimentary manner the cultural heritage of China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and the international Chinese community and be able to contrast the Chinese culture with his or her own in an informal manner
