HIT 212 ICD-10-CM/PCS Credits: (4)
This course focuses on the ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS classification systems. The course will introduce the student to the professional standards for coding and reporting of diagnostic inpatient and outpatient services and inpatient procedure services. Coding characteristics, conventions and guidelines will be applied in identifying and accurately assigning codes to diseases, conditions and procedures. Health records, manual and computerized coding methods, and coding references will be utilized in the coding process.Students may be required to complete activities within a simulated electronic medical record. Class consists of three hours of lecture and two laboratory hours. Prerequisite(s): HIT 101 , HIT 110 , BIO 168 or BIO 171 and BIO 172 . Pre/co-requisite(s): BIO 221 .
Learning Outcomes
- Explain the purpose of coding and classification systems.
- Apply the basic characteristics, conventions, and guidelines of the ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS classification system when coding and reporting diagnostic and procedural services.
- Identify and accurately assign ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS codes to diseases, conditions, and procedures using the coding book and/or an encoder.
- Apply diagnostic related group sequencing and selection principles to any group of diagnoses or procedures
- Define and utilize case-mix and severity of illness classifications.
- Identify the source documents used for collecting healthcare data and critique chart to determine if documentation supports diagnosis.
- Validate coding accuracy using clinical information found in the health record and resolve discrepancies between coded data and supporting documentation.
- Identify and utilize coding references used in the assignment and reporting of codes (i.e. Coding Clinic, CMS Communiqués, etc.).
- Ensure coding quality and compliance with third party payer and Quality Improvement Organizations rules.
